The Paris Olympics will have a new line-up we have never seen before. The Olympic committee has decided on adding the following sports for 2024: breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing. But these classic Olympic events (boxing, weightlifting, and baseball) will be removed from the schedule.
Sports returning or being added to the Paris 2024 Olympics are as follows:
1. Skateboarding
The Olympic committee projected the idea to add skateboarding to the schedule back in 2016. They did add it to the program in 2020 and it will be making a return for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Skateboarding is making a name for itself by how young the medalists are on the podium. The gold went to 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya, and the silver medalist, Rayssa Leal, also was 13 years old at the time.
2. Sport climbing
Sport climbing was another sport added to the schedule in the Tokyo Olympics. This event raised controversy in the climbing community for being forced to compete in three different variations of climbing. This event is scored by the combined score of speed climbing, bouldering, and lead climbing.
3. Surfing
For a centennial, people have been asking for surfing to be added to the Olympics. After many years, surfing was added to the program. For the 2024 Olympics, the location is in a prime spot, definitely, a must-watch for the Paris games. Names to watch out for are: Stephanie Gilmore, Caroline Marks, and Italo Ferreira
4. Breaking
The newest addition to the Olympic family is breakdancing, also known as breaking. This will be the first-ever dance-related event in the Olympics. This will be ranked on a point system, with 100 being a perfect score. Since the 1990s, breaking competitions have been held all over the world.
Events not returning to the 2024 Paris Games:
1. Baseball and Softball
These two sports have had a long, complicated history with the IOC – International Olympic Committee. In 1904, baseball debuted and returned in 1912. It was not until 1992 that baseball was in the program every Olympics until 2008. The IOC decided to add baseball back in the 2020 Tokyo games. It will not be in the 2024 Paris games but is planning on making a comeback in 2028 for Los Angeles. Softball has had a similar history as baseball, as it will also be returning in 2028 but not 2024.
2. Boxing
Due to politics within the IOC, boxing will be dropped from the 2024 games. Boxing has been on the program since 1904, and this will be the first time boxing will not be on the schedule since 1912.
3. Weightlifting
This sport has been on the schedule off and on since 1892. It became a permanent event in 1920. This will be the first Olympics since 1920 that weightlifting will not be showcased.
